SAFETY
Safety is the first priority of the Disabled Sports USA Youth Sports Mentoring Program. That’s why we require all chapters to thoroughly screen each volunteer mentor prior to matching them up with a mentee The five basic elements for screening volunteers that our chapters must practice are as follows:
- Written application;
- Criminal background checks and related checks;
- Character reference checks;
- Face-to-face interview; and
- Participation in pre-match training.
BACKGROUND SCREENING
Disabled Sports USA offers all chapters the option to set up a background screening account with the National Center for Safety Initiatives (NCSI) at no start up cost. Two screening options are available through this service: the basic screen ($8) and the Full-Service Background Screen ($25). Background screening account set-up is offered to all DS/USA chapters; however, all chapters involved with the mentoring program must conduct full-service background checks on all individuals who will be interacting with youth mentees through the mentoring program.
