| Huayra Gomez-Garcia
& Garett Ray |
Two new faces have recently joined the Disabled Sports USA
office in Rockville, Md. – Huayra Gomez-Garcia, and
Garett Ray.
Huayra Gomez-Garcia joined DS/USA in January as a program
assistant. In May, she earned her bachelor of science degree
in applied physiology and kinesiology and a minor in Spanish
from the University of Florida. Huayra’s future plans
include returning to school to obtain her degree in physical
therapy. She would also like to return to Cochabamba, Bolivia,
her birthplace, to do community service in a clinic for the
medically underserved.
“I hope to be a positive asset to DS/USA, and I am
confident that my time here will be both inspiring and fulfilling,”
Huayra said.
Garett Ray is an intern in the DS/USA office. Ray, originally
from Canton, Ohio, is a senior at West Liberty State College.
He is working toward earning a degree in business administration
with a specialization in sports management. Ray feels his
internship with DS/USA will help him grow as an individual
through helping others and gaining on-the-job experience.
DS/USA’s SummerFest Tour program awarded grants to
six chapters to further develop their adaptive summer sports
activities with special emphasis on youth programs. Chapters
receiving grants included: Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago;
Michigan Adaptive Sports; Disabled Athletes Sports Association,
Missouri; DS/USA Far West, California; UCO Wellness Center,
Oklahoma; and Wintergreen Adaptive Sports, Virginia. The SummerFest
Tour is designed to enhance the development of adaptive summer
sports across the U.S., with an initial focus on cycling and
water-sports.
In other activities: DS/USA sponsored the National Junior
Disability Championships, July 15-22 in Tampa, Fla., and partnered
with College Park’s O&P Extremity Games, July 28-30
in Orlando, Fla. Scholarships to attend the event were granted
to six chapter members by College Park Industries.
