Races Attract Full Field of Skiers

The 2004 Ski Spectacular’s Level II USSA-sanctioned Giant Slalom race, held on Friday, Dec. 12, saw the highest number of entrants in the event’s history with 62 competitors.

In the women’s race (standing class), Csilla Kristof won a narrow victory over fellow U.S. Disabled Ski Team member Allison Jones with an adjusted time of 111.32 secs. In the mono-ski class, the newest member of the USDST, Laurie Stephens, beat off tough competitors to score a solid victory over teammate Lacey Heward with a lightning time of 111.78 secs. In the men’s competition, George Sansonetis held off Australian Michael Milton to secure the gold in a time of 99.85 secs in the standing division. For the mono-skiers, Paralympic silver medalist Chris Devlin-Young beat off another new U.S. Disabled Ski Team member, Tyler Walker, to secure first place in a time of 100.14 secs.

Both Laurie Stephens and Tyler Walker were profiled in the Winter, 2003, issue of CHALLENGE Magazine as up and coming young skiers with promising futures in elite Paralympic competition.

The 9th annual Corporate Challenge Race which followed on Saturday, Dec. 13, on Lower Sundown offered an opportunity for DS/USA sponsors and other Ski Spectacular participants to race against each other and members of the U.S. Disabled Ski Team. A total of 105 people entered, comprising 21 teams, with victory going to the team from the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center.
